OVERVIEW

For safety reasons and to maintain optimal wheel alignment while the vehicle is in operation, it's important to prevent the axial rod from becoming loose from the steering rack.

Some manufacturers use washers that, combined with an adapted housing flange, effectively prevent this from happening. See the example on the left.

However, many vehicles are not equipped with this locking system on their steering rack and there is a need for it to be secured in an alternative way. That’s why MOOG recommends to always apply a small amount of locker fluid (Loctite 243 or equivalent) to the axial joint housing thread before manually attaching it to the steering rack.

The pictures to the right show an axial rod equipped with vented grooves on its housing thread. In this case, a small amount of fluid must be spread between each groove (as illustrated above). It’s important to ensure that the fluid does not accumulate in the grooves when fixing the axial joint to the steering rack.

MOOG - Hydrobushing - Rubber Frequency

This is why MOOG highly recommends using tools that allow you to control the tightening torque value stated by the manufacturers.
It can be a flat torque wrench or any dedicated adaptor that can be fitted on a standard torque wrench:
