However, many vehicles are not equipped with this locking system on their steering rack and there is a need for it to be secured in an alternative way. That’s why MOOG recommends to always apply a small amount of locker fluid (Loctite 243 or equivalent) to the axial joint housing thread before manually attaching it to the steering rack.

When tightening the axial rod, the wrench contact point on the housing is located quite high, which may lead mechnics to use a long wrench. However, the thread size is much lower (often M12 or M14) and the recommended tightening torque is quite limited (often around 60Nm). Therefore always consult the manufacturer's documentation to find out the correct recommended torque value. Any excessive torque will inevitably cause breakage of the housing thread:
