To avoid this dust boot rotation and twist, the friction with the ball pin and wheel knuckle must be as minimal as possible while still ensuring optimum sealing performance against contamination into  the housing area.

At the ball joint design level, MOOG guarantees the top opening dimensions of the dust boot (i.e. opening height/diameter, upper metal ring clamping force (3)) to optimize sealing performance.

However, there are also two other quick installation steps that can greatly reduce the risk of dust boot twist occurence:

• In addition to cleansing the ball pin seat on the wheel knuckle, it is also important to clean the area where the dust boot opening meets the knuckle, removing any residuals of rust, dust, or salt. (4) 
• To further decrease friction between the dust boot top opening and knuckle flange, MOOG recommends applying a small amount of grease on the top area of the dust boot. (5)
  
  This will not only prevent the dust boot from twisting, it also protects its upper surface from excessive wear caused by friction with the knuckle. Additionally, it will create a lubricating film that helps to prevent moisture from penetrating inside the ball joint.
