How to Adjust Camber and Caster on Non-Adjustable Vehicles

Getting Camber and Caster in Specification

Many late model vehicles have limited adjustment of camber and caster. Due to close tolerances in the manufacture of new vehicles, limited adjustment is needed to align the wheels on a new vehicle. But as steering and suspension systems wear additional adjustment may be necessary to maintain optimal wheel alignment. Proper wheel alignment is necessary to promote long tire life, vehicle stability and steering wheel return.

Camber and caster alignment angles must be in specification for proper tire life, steering wheel return, vehicle stability and improved suspension component life. However, component wear and damage from incidents such as hitting a pothole can cause camber and caster to come out of specification.

Diagnosing the Problem

Upon determining that a vehicle’s camber and/or caster is out of specification, follow the manufacturer’s service procedures to adjust the settings if applicable (some vehicles do not have provisions for such adjustment). If ideal alignment cannot be achieved, check the steering and suspension for worn or damaged parts or aftermarket parts which may not match OE specification. Replace any suspect parts with new parts and repeat the alignment procedure. If the vehicle is still out of alignment, then an adjustable ball joint can be installed to improve the vehicle’s alignment.

MOOG Adjustable Ball Joints

Remove and replace the non-adjustable upper ball joint with a MOOG Problem Solver adjustable ball joint. In many cases, the ball joints are pressed into the steering knuckle or control arm and are difficult to remove and install, especially with age. Using a press tool is the proper method to remove and install the ball joint. Avoid using a hammer to complete the job; it can damage the steering knuckle and the new ball joint.

Installing MOOG adjustable ball joints adds camber and caster adjustment to vehicles that have limited adjustment from the factory. Camber and caster adjustability will increase from -1º to +1º or more depending on the application. If needed, they can also be readjusted for future adjustments.
